How to write a Succinct Elevator Pitch in 4 Sentences

1.Introduce Yourself

In an elevator pitch, as with any other sales pitch, you want to be succinct and think about what the person you're pitching wants to hear.

In the case of introducing yourself they probably don't want to hear that you have a dog. Maybe you guys will talk about this later.

But your first sentence in an elevator pitch should usually be your name, your major, your school, and your graduation date. For example it could be something like,

“Hello my name is Jessica. My major is mechanical engineering. I'm going to MIT and I'll be graduating in June 2026.”

What this does is it tells the recruiter all the things they want to know about you in that first sentence, your name, your major, what school you go to, and when will be able to hire you on full-time after an internship.

Another thing that the graduation date does is it tells them what year you are so if they're only looking for sophomores and you’re a junior or they're only looking for freshmen and you’re a senior then it'll tell them that you're not what they’re looking for right now.

2. Tell Me Something AMAZING. Brag without bragging

In this next sentence you are really going to want to WOW the recruiter or person that you're pitching to, so you want to say something unique about your experience or something that you have accomplished.

So for example for a while one of my sentences for an elevator pitch was, “I have three apps on the Google Play Store”. Because not a lot of candidates have that many apps on the Google Play store or any apps on the Google Play Store this made me stand out from other candidates.

That being said, if you have something like job experience in your field I would put that here. One example of that could be something like, “Last summer I interned with Megatronix. Com working on their Integrated Systems to optimize the sockets and widgets.”

Of course this is a fake example and I'm not even sure if that's a real company but you get my drift of trying to describe in one sentence what you did at the company or something cool that you did.

You want to be careful here to say things that are true and describe the situation. You don't want to basically just say I am awesome. You want to say I did these things and from these things you know that I'm awesome or if you saved the company a certain amount of money make sure to put that in.

3. Intent, what are you trying to do?

Okay so now the recruiter knows who you are and what you can do or what you've done in the past but now you want to tell them what you're here to try to do today what you want to do in the future.

This sentence is really for future intent or future goals for the upcoming summer or upcoming season. So for example you want to say something like,

“I'm at this job fair because I'm looking for an internship next summer dealing with the wheels on buses.”

or

“This summer I hope to gain more experience in the field of widgets and do hickeys.”

What intent does is it shows the recruiter what you're interested in and if there's a particular section of their company that does that they can probably connect you with them or tell you more about it.

4. Wrap it up with a Question

The reason why I recommend wrapping it up with a question is because recruiters or people you're pitching to have already probably been pitched to a couple times that day so after a while it gets hard to remember what people are saying and carry on the conversation.

So by asking a direct question about something you're interested in it can make it easier for the recruiter to respond to you and want to talk to you longer.

It can also show if you've done any kind of research on the company or if there's a specific sector in the company that you're interested in working in you can get more information.

As a bonus tip make sure you show enthusiasm to be at the place and thank the recruiter or person you're pitching to after you talk to them.

Sample Elevator Pitch

Hello my name is Jessica. My major is mechanical engineering.

I'm going to MIT and I'll be graduating in June 2026. Last summer I interned with Megatronix.com working on their Integrated Systems to optimize the sockets and widgets.

This summer I hope to gain more experience in the field of widgets and do hickeys.

I see the Megatronix.com works with widgets, is that something an intern could work on?”
